Blogmas | Prepare your boots for Saint Nick
In a few countries like Romania or Belgium, Santa Claus has to share December with another white-bearded man, who gives gifts to those who are nice, but also to those who aren't.
And his name is Saint Nicholas. And on the 5th of December is Saint Nicholas Eve.
We celebrate his birthday on the 6th of December and on this evening he walks with his white horse over our rooftops and leaves presents for all the children that were good that year. And for those who were naughty he leaves them a branch, well to be fair it is actually a whip or a rod, as you may call it. And he leaves the presents in your boots, so on the 5th everyone polishes their shoes.
Saint Nicholas isn't as wealthy as Santa Clause, and he generally leaves fruits or smaller toys. It is believed that he helped women and children in need. And his story began when he helped a few sisters, leaving them golden coins so that they can get married and start a better life.
And, to be fair, when I was little the only distinction, in my imagination, between Santa and St Nick was that St Nick was thin. I even liked drawing pictures of them both, with white beards and red suits.
What did St Nick leave in your boots? And if you don't celebrate St Nick, you might want to reconsider that and start a new "tradition"!
